At a Glance:
CrossFit Experience: I started CrossFit right around Thanksgiving of 2016, so just over 10 months.
Favorite WOD/Exercise: I can't believe I'm going to say this, but I love anything with cardio (and this is coming from someone who couldn't run 400m the first day)! I love chippers, EMOM, partner and Hero WOD's.
PR Pride:I was super excited to hit 250 on my deadlift, but learning to rope climb and do DUBS also made me happy.
Least Favorite WOD/Exercise: My least favorite is Olympic lifting! I have a hard time remembering the moves and my body just doesn't want to move that way lol! Snatches are the devil but I'm hopeful that one day I'll like them too (sorry Dustin).
Tell us about yourself.
My name is Cindy Furman and I'm 49 years old. I'm an Air Force veteran and worked as a physical therapist at Akron Children's Hospital.
Why did you start CrossFit?
In a short time span I lost my mother to cancer, was hit by a drunk driver, which caused numerous neck and back injuries and began having seizures. Not long after, I was diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury, PTSD, fibromyalgia and uterine cancer. It seemed like I had just gotten all of that somewhat under control when I was told I had MS. Needless to say, I was a wreck! I was in pain both physically and emotionally and depressed. It hurt to move, it hurt to walk, it took all I had to get dressed everyday. I kept seeing ads for World's Best Boot Camp on my Facebook feed and told my husband I wanted to find out more about it. Only an hour later we ran into one of the coaches (Carmen) at the grocery store. I told her about my health issues and limitations, but Carmen told me I could modify everything to meet my needs. Before I could change my mind, she signed me up! I was scared to death and barely made it through the baseline test the first day. But everyone was so nice and so encouraging, they made me feel like I could conquer the world! Much to my surprise, I not only lost 10 inches and took 5 minutes off my baseline, I won the biggest transformation! I asked my husband if there was any way to fit it in our budget for me to continue onto CrossFit, and he told me after seeing the changes in me both physically and emotionally, and seeing how happy it made me,we would make it a priority...
What is your favorite thing about CrossFit?
My favorite thing about CrossFit is the close-knit atmosphere. It brings me back to my military days, where it's physically and mentally tough, but everyone works together and no one is left behind. I love that all of these people of different ages, religions, political views, etc. can all come together and have fun, inside and outside of the gym. I also love feeling like I've been challenged and pushed to my limit after a WOD.
What motivates you to CrossFit?
My health motivates me every single day because I want to be here for my family for a long time! I still hurt, I still have limitations, and many days I have to push through the pain to go to the gym. But once we start warming up, I feel good, and I have my old self back for a few hours. I also look forward to seeing my friends, some of which have been with me since day one. All of the coaches are awesome, and it's always fun competing with my husband!
What goals would you like to achieve in the next year that CrossFit can help you with?
I'd really like to have the strength to RX anything on the rig!
What would you tell someone who was thinking about starting CrossFit, but was nervous or scared?
Oh my goodness, don't hold back! Anyone of any age can do this! It doesn't matter what your limitations are, it doesn't matter if you haven't worked out in years, and it doesn't matter if you can't run or lift- they will find a way to modify the workout to YOU! CrossFit 330 truly is for everyBODY! Life is too short, just do it!
